A Good News Story

An Item from Rosedale Minor Hockey Association

March 2009

A Final Story to share from the Tournament -

The Novice Rosedale Canadiens participated in the House League Tournament this year, without "success" on the score board. In fact, they gave up 34 Goals. One of our Teams from the Midget HL Division - the London Wild - stood behind the Goalie in the Canadiens End, and everytime he was able to make a save, they Cheered and hollered POSITIVE encouragement to him. As you can tell by the Scoring against him, he needed the encouragement. They continued to do this, and moreso adopted this young child to their team.

On Wednesday, the House League Championship Day, London made it to the Finals against our own Rosedale Flyers. This young Goalie from the Novice Canadiens, along with his Mom & Dad, made sure to return the favour. Wearing a Team London jersey, our young goalie stood with his parents, on his fathers' knee, behind the Wilds' Goalie. With every save made, this young boy yelled, cheered, and slammed on the windows, encouraging his new team mates on.

London went on to beat the Flyers, and win the championship. The Coaching staff went to the young Goalie from Rosedale, and brought him onto the ice after the game, and put him in the position of honour - right in the middle of the Team for the Championship Picture. After the team had accepted their medals, and had left the ice, a member of their Coaching staff came to the Office, and had advised they were one medal short for their team. A "Gold" Medal was given to the team, who in turn presented it to their Novice Team Mate from Rosedale.

THIS is why we play hockey. THIS is why we encourage our youth to participate in Team Sports. A very special thanks goes to our Friends in London who made this tournament a special memory to a young child from Hamilton.

CSA Stickers on Helmets
January 30, 2009- updated March 09, 2009

CSA Stickers on Helmets must not be removed. Doing so will void insurance coverage as the helmet is deemed to have been altered. Please read the attached bulletin.

TO:                  ALLIANCE Hockey Representative and Recreational Councils, Referee Zone Co-ordinators

FROM:                        Dan Gibbons

DATE:                        Thursday January 29, 2009

Re:                  CSA Approved Stickers

It has been reported that ALLIANCE Hockey Participants both Referees and Players have been removing CSA Stickers from their helmets.

Hockey Canada Rule 24.6:

“If the Referee’s attention is drawn to the possibility that a facial protector or helmet may not be certified (CSA approved), or if the Referee observes that a facial protector or helmet may not be certified, and should that piece of equipment in effect turn out not to be certified, the referee shall assess a Minor penalty and at the same time order that illegal piece of equipment removed from the game.”

Alliance Hockey – 28.0.1

“All players, including goaltenders, shall wear a CSA approved hockey helmet to which a CSA approved hockey facial protector must be attached and not altered in any way.  Penalties shall be assessed in accordance with HC Rule #24.”

Once a CSA sticker has been removed from a helmet it is considered to be altered and as such no longer meets ALLIANCE Hockey, Ontario Hockey Federation and Hockey Canada standards of protective equipment.  Further being altered brings into question Hockey Canada insurance coverage if an injury was to occur.

Please give this Bulletin your widest distribution amongst participants.

Thanks

Kind regards,

Dan Gibbons

Trillium Grant Received
March 09, 2009- updated March 09, 2009

This year, MMHA received an $8,000.00 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. This grant allowed us to purchase goalie equipment that allowed us to outfit goalies from Pre-Novice through our Midget divisions. The grant also allowed us to enhance our operating activities through the purchase of a computer, printer, LED projector and other minor equipment. We now have direct office access to all of our registration documents through our governing body, the Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario, as well as internet and web access.

This grant has enhanced our ability to provide our membership with up to date information' increase our operating efficiencies and help parents avoid the large expense associated with the purchase of goalie equipment.

A special note of thanks goes to Ron Greenway, Les Gajdacs, Jim Dempsey. Mary Lou Carrigan and Pat Potter for their efforts over the two days to make sure registrations were done and all teams looked after.
